Scope and Content

Deeds and documents relating to the Winsloe family estate in the town and parish of Trelleck, Monmouthshire, mainly comprising family settlements and leases, 1701-1910.

Administrative / Biographical History

James Hodges of Monmouth, and later of Trelleck, timber merchant, built up estates in Trelleck and Henllys by purchase. In 1796 Aurelia (c. 1776-1822) his only child married John Eliot Winsloe (d. 1842) of Twickenham, esq., youngest son of Thomas Winsloe of the same, esq., when the estates were settled on their marriage. John and Aurelia's first and only surviving son was John Hodges Winsloe (c. 1797-1862), who was heir at law of his grandfather James Hodges. There was also at least one daughter, Aurelia (fl. 1835-42). John Elliot Winsloe was described as of Seaton, Devon, in 1823, of Exeter in 1828-1831, and of St Davids, Pembrokeshire, in 1842. John Hodges Winsloe was described as of Trelleck, 1823-1854, of Llantarnam Abbey in 1831, and of Henllys, 1842-1854. James Arnold Winsloe and John George Elliot Winsloe (fl. 1878-97) were both described as of Liverpool in 1878, although the latter was described as of New Zealand, 1880-97. The fate of the estate is not apparent, although in 1897 John George Elliot Winsloe gave W. C. A. Williams of Monmouth, solicitor, power of attorney for the sale of unnamed real estate.
