Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The British Arctic Air Route Expedition, 1930-1931 (leader Henry Gino Watkins) was organised to investigate the possibilities of an air route between England and Canada across Greenland. Sailing in Quest from London in July 1930, the expedition reached Angmagssalik in East Greenland, where a base camp was established. The following month a meteorological station was established on the ice cap where a series of observations were conducted. Aerial photographs were taken and sledging and boat journeys were made to survey and chart parts of the east coast of Greenland and to explore the ice cap of the interior.
