Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
William John Rees (d. 1918) was a prominent Swansea land agent who owned various properties in Swansea and South Wales and a large number of freehold and leasehold ground rents in Lewisham, Kent. In building up his personal estate Rees acquired properties in Swansea and South Wales but also embarked on a sizeable development project in Brockley, Lewisham. Rees' assistant Thomas Greenslade Hews (1878-1957) took charge of the Lewisham operation. The development proceeded under his superintendence by the granting of underleases to the builders. In 1910 Hews was taken into partnership by Rees and took increasing control of the practice of William John Rees & Partners. His widow Elizabeth Rees (d. 1937), T. G. Hews and Herbert Alfred Pritchard became trustees of the William John Rees Estate. In 1950 the Estate devolved upon Rees' grandchildren Pamela Rees, Elizabeth Joan Rees and William Tudor Rees and his step-daughter Marjorie Elizabeth Worsley Sutton. In 1965 Pamela Rees put her one third share of the estate into Trust. The Trustees included Edward Rhys Richards (d. 1973) who had succeeded Hews as senior partner of William John Rees & Partners (then re-named Rees Richards & Partners).
