Administrative / Biographical History

Darfield parish originally contained the townships of Ardsley, Billingley, Darfield, Great Houghton, Little Houghton, Wombwell and Worsbrough. Both Wombwell and Worsbrough are the sites of Medieval chapels, and Worsbrough seems to have kept its own registers from at least 1559. Wombwell became a consolidated chapelry in 1864 and thereafter kept its own registers [Doncaster Archives reference P49]. Ardsley began to keep its own registers in 1839, and was assigned a chapelry district in 1844 [Doncaster Archives reference P70]. Ardsley, Wombwell and Worsbrough are now all parishes in their own right while Great Houghton is now a chapelry and keeps its own registers.
