Administrative / Biographical History

This company’s origins can be traced back to the private bank of Clymo, Treffry, Hawke, West & Co., established in 1864 in Liskeard. It was closely linked with the Cornish mining industry. Branches were opened at Bodmin (1865), Looe (1866), Camelford (1867) and Wadebridge (1879). In 1885 it was reconstructed as a joint-stock bank, known as Western Counties Bank, and was acquired by Capital & Counties Bank (est. 1877) in 1890.
