Scope and Content

Variant title: Shaka no go-honji 釋迦の御本地 [釈迦の御本地]. Author/compiler: Unknown. Imprint: [Kyōto] , Tachibanaya Genbē, Kan'ei 20, 1643. Kanki on fol. 23b of maki 下 reads: 寛永廿癸未年九月吉日 ／ 橘屋源兵衛開板. Description: 2 kan (of 3), rebound in 1 satsu, Japanese style, in a box. Incomplete copy, consisting of maki 上 and 下 only. (Maki 上) ff. 22; (maki. 下) ff. 23. 26.3 x 17.3 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 21 x 15.6 cm. (average). Single-line borders. Fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text, with printed furigana in places. 11 lines to page, 20-22 characters to line. Dark blue covers, renewed at an early date, without title slip. No gedai. Title from naidai at head of each maki. Hashiragaki: Shaka honji jō (ge) 釈迦本地上 (下) + folio no. Edition: The earliest blockprint, following an undated movable type edition of Kan'ei period (1624-44). Plain text without illustrations. Other 17th century blockprinted editions were published in Keian 1 (1648), Meireki 2 (1656) the first illustrated edition, Kanbun 2 (1662), Kanbun 10 (1670), etc. Contents: A tale of the Muromachi period (Muromachi jidai monogatari 室町時代物語), comprising a brief account of incidents in the life of the Buddha, with material drawn both from Buddhist scriptures and from popular legends.
