    • 7 volumes Condition: Fair to good. Urauchi repairs in a few places. Impression: Type slightly worn, with some thickening of strokes. Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal, Jōeiji 常栄寺 (Rinzai temple in Yamaguchi- ken) on first page of each satsu. Also brownish-red seal in form of a bronze vessel, reading Keinan 桂南, printed inkoku. Manuscript notes: Copious textual notes, red and black, both interlinear and in margins, up to beginning of satsu 4. In an early-Edo period hand.

Scope and Content

Alternative reading of title: Kyodō oshō goroku. Author/compiler: Miao Yuan 妙源. Imprint: N.p., n.d. [Keichō / Genna period, c. 1600-24] . No colophon. Description: 4 kan, 7 satsu. 31 x 21.2 cm. Fukurotoji. Movable type. Printing frame 21 x 15 cm. Double-line borders surrounding text area, with 'flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin. Kanbun text, with manuscript kunten in black and reading marks in red added in maki 1-5. 8 lines to page, 17 characters to line. Original covers missing; replaced in recent times by covers of rough white paper, each with handwritten gedai: Kidōroku 虚堂錄 + satsu no. Title from naidai at head of contents list in maki 1. In a blue chitsu case. Hashiragaki and foliation: various. Edition: The second edition of this work to be published in Japan, printed from movable type in Keichō or Genna period. Example of a bōkoku-bon 坊刻本. The earlier edition was a Gozan-ban, based on a Chinese Song (宋) edition, published in Shōwa 2 正和二年, 1313. (For details of this Gozan-ban, see GK, pp. 364-5.) Textually, the present edition is closely modelled on the Gozan-ban, ending with the same 6-line kango giving the date (Shōwa 2=1313) and original publisher's name. This kango ends as follows: ・・・ 正和癸丑開 / 爐日拙孫宗卓敬書 / 沙彌宗哲等施財開板. Contents: Collected sayings (goroku 語録) of the Chan Buddhist monk Zhiyu (宋) 智愚, also known as Xutang 虚堂, compiled in the Song period by Miaoyuan 妙源. In 3 kan (上, 中, 下) + supplementary maki (後録).
