    • 1 volume Condition: Generally good, but with some worm damage, particularly in maki 1, ff. 20-45. A few folios stained. Cropped at upper and lower edges. Impression: Sharp and clear for the most part, but with marked evidence of block wear in places. Seals of ownership: Square red seal, Kasan or Kazan 珂山, on first page of each maki. Manuscript notes: Scattered headnotes in upper margins of maki 1 and 2. Shubiki and other reading marks in red ink in maki 1-4.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Hōtan 鳳潭, scholar-monk of Kegon sect, 1654-1738. Imprint: [Kyōto] , Murakami Tōzaemon, Nagata Chōbē, Inoue Chūbē, Genroku 16, 1703. Kanki on last folio of maki 5 reads: 元禄癸未年正月人日 / 壽于梓 / 日東帝幾 / 書林 / 村上藤左衞門 / 永田調兵衞 / 井上忠兵衞. Description: 5 kan, formerly in 5 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. (1) ff. 55; (2) ff. 34; (3) ff. 48; (4) ff. 49; (5) ff. 47, [1] . 26.7 x 18.8 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 21.8 x 16.4 cm. Single-line borders round each page, not extending to hanshin. Frames, but no fishtail design, on hanshin. Kanbun text with printed okurigana and kaeriten. 14 lines to page, 25 characters to line. Renewed light blue front cover of maki 1 only, with embossed floral pattern. Renewed title slip with manuscript gedai: 発矇鈔. Title from naidai at head of each maki. Hashiragaki: Chū yuima eyō hotsumōshō 註維摩會要發矇鈔 + maki no. + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: The only pre-modern edition recorded in Bussho kaisetsu daijiten 仏書解説大辞典 and Kokusho sōmokuroku 国書総目録. Contents: Commentary by Hōtan 鳳潭, on the Yuima-kyō 維摩經 or Yuimakitsu-kyō 維摩詰經 (Skt. Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa-sūtra). This sutra sets forth the beliefs of Vimalakirtī, a lay disciple of the Buddha, at a time when Mahayanist teachings were evolving.
