    • 1 volume Condition: Fair. Some brown water stains and unrepaired worm damage. Impression: Atozuri. Judging by evidence of wear on the blocks, printed towards the end of the Kamakura period, c. early 14th century. Seals of ownership: None, other than Getsumeisō 月明莊, seal of Kōbunsō, on fol. 15b. Manuscript notes: Reading marks as noted above, and brief marginal notes on ff. 1a and 13a.

Scope and Content

Variant title: Kongō hannyagyō kaidai 金剛般若經開題 [金剛般若経開題]. Variant title: Kongōkyō kaidai 金剛經開題 [金剛経開題]. Author/compiler: Kūkai 空海, founder of the Shingon sect, 774-835, also known as Kōbō Daishi 弘法大師. Imprint: N.p. [Kōyasan] , Kōan 3,1280. Kanki on last folio verso reads: 弘安參年庚辰六月十七日沙門覺胤書,. Description: 1 kan, 1 jō. ff. [15] , unnumbered. Apparently incomplete (one or more folios missing). 25.4 x 15.6 cm. Bound in detchō style. Blockprint. Printing frame 21.5 x 12.5 cm. Mixed ganpi and kōzo paper, printed on both sides. No borders or vertical rules. Kanbun text, with a few siddham characters on ff. 1a and 1b. Handwritten kunten in black katakana and some kaeriten in red. 7 lines to page, 17 characters to line. Mid-brown covers, old but probably not original. No title slip. Contained in box with manuscript title: 金剛経開題. Title from naidai at head of text. Bidai preceding kanki: Kongō hannyagyō kaidai 金剛般若經開題. Edition: Kōya-ban. This is the only pre-Edo period edition. A later edition was published in Hōei 3 (1706). The monk Kakuin 覺胤, whose name appears as copyist in the kanki of the present edition, was a calligrapher responsible for writing the hanshita of other Buddhist works published at Kōyasan 高野山. Contents: A short interpretation, from the Shingon standpoint, of the main teachings of the Vajracchedikā-prajñāpāramitā-sūtra (金剛般若波羅蜜經), itself a digest of the essentials of the Mahāprajñā-pāramitā-sūtra (大般若波羅蜜多經).
