    • 1 volume Condition: Excellent. Impression: Atozuri. Some pages show considerable block wear, but illustrations are mostly sharp and clear. Illustrations: Single- and double-page sumizuri illustrations in: (maki 1) ff. 4b-5a, 9a, 13a, 17a; (maki 2) ff. 3b-4a, 8a, 12a, 16a, (maki 3) ff. 4a, 8a, 12a, 16a; (maki 4) ff. 3b-4a, 8a, 12a, 17a; (maki 5) ff. 3b-4a, 8a, 12a, 16a. Also numerous in-text woodcuts. Seals of ownership: Four square red seals on first page of each maki: (1) Sosekien Kimura zō 素石園木村藏, (2) Taikō sanbō no in 苔香山房之印, (3) Usuisōdō no in 于水艸堂之印, (4) Fukisai toshoki 不覊齋圖書記 (seal of Akiyama 秋山 Fukisai).

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Namura Jōhaku 苗村丈伯, physician, fl. late-17th century. Used the following gō: Sōdenshi 艸田子, Sunbokushi 寸木子, Sankei 三徑, etc. (Preface signed Sōdenshi Sankei.). Imprint: [Kyōto] , Yamatoya Kanshichirō, Genroku 6, 1693. Colophon on last folio verso of maki 5 reads: 元祿六年癸酉の夏六月吉日 ／ 四条通東洞院東エ入町 ／ 大和屋勘七良 ／ 同梓. Description: 5 kan, 5 satsu, bound in 1 vol. (western style). (Maki 1) ff. 19; (2) ff. 19; (3) ff. 19; (4) ff. 21; (5) ff. 21. 22.4 x 16 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 19.4 x 14.3 cm. Single-line borders. No fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text with printed furigana. 10 lines to page, 22-24 characters to line. Original pale-fawn front cover of maki 1 only, within western style half-leather binding. Original printed title slip on left bearing gedai: E-iri (tsunogaki in circle) 繪入 nan chōhōki 男重寶記. Title from naidai. Hashiragaki: Nan chōhō 男重宝 + maki no. + folio no. Edition: First printed edition. Followed by an augmented edition (Zōho nan chōhōki 増補男重寶記) in Genroku 15, 1702. Contents: A manual of useful information for men of the bushi 武士 class, citing and explaining rules of etiquette, speech and behaviour in everyday life.
