Author/compiler: Yixing 一行, 683-727, author of original work. Chikan 智觀, writer of commentary. Imprint: Kōyasan, Kita Heibē, Genroku 2, 1689. Closing note on ff. 24b-25a ends: 元祿第二己巳天七月吉旦 / 南山 住侶沙門 / 備後宥義印 / 高野山 來田平兵衛板行. From this it would appear that Yūgi 宥義 was responsible for printing this work or for supervising the printing. Description: 1 kan, 1 jō, in a chitsu case. ff. [49] , numbered 1-25 on alternate folios. Leaves printed on both sides and folded at inner (binding) edge, not at fore-edge. This suggests that the book was originally bound in detchō style. Folio numbering printed near outer fold (recto) of each folded leaf. 24.9 x 16.2 cm. Folded leaves formerly stitched at spine, now restored to a semblance of detchō form. Blockprint. Printing frame varies between 18.5 and 19.5 x 13 cm. No borders. Kanbun text mixed with some siddham script, with printed kunten and kaeriten alongside, and some kutōten. 6 lines to page, 10 characters to line. Renewed light tan-coloured shibubiki covers, without title slip. Manuscript gedai: 一行禪師字母表文林註. Title from naidai on fol. 1a. Abbreviated title Bunrin 文林 is printed above folio no. Edition: Kōya-ban, a late example. The only edition of this work yet located (see description in Kōya-ban no kenkyū 高野板之研究, p. 707, quoting closing note and kanki). Contents: A table of sounds (vowels and consonants) expressed by Sanskrit characters in the siddham script, drawn up by the Chinese monk Yixing 一行 in the Tang period, with explanatory commentary by the Japanese monk Chikan 智觀.
