(Maki 上) ff. 35; (maki 下) ff. 29. 26.6 x 18.7 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 22.7-23.4 x 17.3 cm. Double-line borders, with 'flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin. Katakana-majiri text, with printed furigana (katakana) and printed kutōten. 12 lines to page, 26-28 characters to line. Original mid-brown front cover (now somewhat rubbed) of maki 上 only. Original title slip with printed gedai: 承久記 上. Naidai and gedai identical. Hashiragaki: Jōkyū jō (ge) 承久上 (下) + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: The first, and possibly the only, blockprinted edition of this work. Although undated, the present edition was probably published c. Kan'ei 9-10 (1632-33), since it appears to be uniform in hanshiki with the Kan'ei 9 edition of Meitokuki 明德記 (Or.59.b.32) and the Kan'ei 10 edition of Ōninki 應仁記 (Or.75.ff.18). It was preceded by 3 movable type editions, one dated Genna 4 (1618), the others datable to Genna and Kan'ei periods. Contents: A war narrative (gunki monogatari), name and date of compiler unknown, giving an account of the Jōkyū war (Jōkyū no ran 承久の乱) of 1221, an unsuccessful attempt by the retired emperor Go-Toba to overthrow the Kamakura shogunate. Together with Meitokuki and Ōninki, this work belongs to the group of three war tales known collectively as Sandaiki 三代記.
