Author/compiler: Zangchuan 藏川, Chinese monk. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame varies between 21.6 and 22.2 x 15.7 cm. Single-line borders, with 'flower petal' fishtail design on hanshin. Manuscript gedai on covering paper: 佛説地藏菩薩發心因緣十王經. Title from naidai on fol. 1a. Hashiragaki: Jūō-gyō 十王經 + folio no. Edition: It is not clear whether an edition dated Bunroku 3 文禄三年 (1594) ever existed, although the manuscript ''kanki'' quoted under Imprint above appears in most, if not all, surviving copies of the book. This purports to credit the monk Tokusen 得仙 with publication and illustration of an edition dated Bunroku 3 (1594), but no reference work confirms this with certainty. The probability is that the present copy was printed at some date around 1650, though it may equally be a reprint from earlier blocks. It is in any case based on a Ming Chinese or Korean edition. Contents: A non-canonical Chinese Buddhist work, first published in the Tiansheng 天聖 period (1023-31). It concerns the savage punishments inflicted on human souls after death as they pass through the domains of the Ten Kings of Hell, and the saving power of the Bodhisattva Jizō who is here equated with the fifth of the Ten Kings. The theme of this work is much influenced by Taoist teachings.
