    • 1 volume Condition: Fair. Worm damage chiefly confined to upper margins. Many leaves soiled by handling, and water stains in maki 上. Cover cropped at upper edge. Impression: Atozuri, from moderately worn blocks. Illustrations: Single- and double-page sumizuri woodcuts in an unsophisticated style on ff. 5a, 8a, 10a, 13a, 16b-17a, 19a-b, 25b-26a, 27a, 32a, 35b of maki 上, and on ff. 3b-4a, 6b, 18a-b, 21b-22a, 25a, 26b-27a, 28b-29a, 33a, 34a, 36b, 38a, 39a, 41b-42a and 43b-44a of maki 下. Artist unknown. Seals of ownership: Oblong red seal of Sir Ernest Satow, 英國薩道藏書, on first page of maki 上 and 下. On the same pages, small square red seal printed inkoku, Usuisōdō no in 于水艸堂之印, and larger oblong red seal, 對梅宇主萩原乙彦蔵于俳書二酉精舍 (seal of Hagiwara Otohiko 萩原乙彦). Manuscript notes: Note in red ink dated Enpō 8 (1680) on last page of maki 上, after end of printed text, giving background information on author and work.

Scope and Content

Author/compiler: Ibaraki Shunsaku 茨木春朔, physician of Edo, also known as Jiōbō Tarutsugu 地黃坊樽次, 1614-71. Imprint: Kyōto, Nakamura Gohē, Kanbun 7, 1667. Kanki on last page of text reads: 寛文七年五月吉日 / 寺町二条下ル町 / 中村五兵衛. Description: 2 kan, formerly in 2 satsu, now rebound in 1 vol. western style. (Maki 上) ff. 36; (maki 下) ff. 45. 26.2 x 18.3 cm. Fukurotoji. Blockprint. Printing frame 20.4-20.9 x 16.2 cm. Single-line borders all round, including illustrations. No fishtail design on hanshin. Hiragana-majiri text, with printed furigana and dakuten. 10 lines to page, 18-20 characters to line. Original dark blue front cover of maki 上 only, with original printed title slip. Gedai: 水鳥記上 Naidai and gedai identical. Hashiragaki: Suichōki Jō 水鳥記上 (ge 下) + folio no. In a western style half-leather binding. Edition: Two Kyōto editions are recorded: one in Kanbun 2 (1662) and the present one of Kanbun 7 (1667). Also an undated edition (probably Kanbun / Enpō period, c. 1665-81) published in 3 satsu, 15 lines to the page, by Shōkai 松會 of Edo. Contents: Humorous account of a sake-drinking contest held in Keian 1 (1648) between the author, Ibaraki Shunsaku, and Ikegami Tarōemon 池上太郎右衞門, also known as Daijamaru Sokofuka 大蛇丸底深, of Musashi. Written in a mock-solemn style parodying the style of gunki monogatari 軍記物語. Author's preface on ff. 1a-2a. Contents list (mokuroku) on fol. 2b of maki 上 and 1a-b of maki 下.
