Scope and Content

Ploughley Rural District was created by the Oxfordshire Review Order 1932. It replaced Bicester Rural District and included parts of Woodstock and Headington Rural Districts (see F A Youngs 'Guide to the Local Administrative Units of England' for a list of parishes)

Ploughley RD was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 and was absorbed into Cherwell District

In common with other rural and urban district councils, its responsibilities included public health, housing, rating, planning, building regulations, water supplies, sewerage, some roads, and (during World War Two) evacuation

The collection includes some records of Mid-Oxfordshire Joint Regional Planning Committee

The collection was originally catalogued as Ploughley RDC (accession numbers 1220, 1326, 1341, 1562, 1563, 1564, 1616, 1620, 1622 & 2456)

Re-catalogued by Chris Gilliam and Della Fredericks with additional records from accession numbers 2210, 3418, 3434, 3511 & 4780

Date completed: June 1012
