Scope and Content

The Papers of David Laing constitute Section IV of the Laing Collection with shelfmarks La.IV. Contained within the Papers are: Laing family documents, biographical material relating to David Laing, Laing family correspondence, and Bannatyne Club papers; notes and drafts etc on various subjects including personal subjects, artists, architects, engravers, drama, Edinburgh, printers and early printing, and art; transcripts of poems and notes on poems, poets and prose; royal letters including papers, notes and transcripts of letters of Margaret, Queen of Scotland and of James V, 1503-1537; transcripts of State Papers, Scottish correspondence; transcripts of letters of the Duke of Rothes between 1660-1671; transcripts and notes relating to John Knox; and, the Wodrow transcripts.

Handlist, H4; Another important finding aid is the alphabetical Index to Manuscripts held at Edinburgh University Library, Special Collections and Archives. Additions to the typed slips in sheaf binders were made until 1987. As a result of a project supported by the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council (SHEFC), section IV of the Laing Collection has been conserved and catalogued.
