MacMahon's 'A History of Hull'

Manuscript notes and typescript draft versions of the text for the book by Kenneth MacMahon

Kenneth MacMahon was born in Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire in 1914. He was schooled in Beverley and became a noted antiquarian and historian, latterly working in adult and continuing education at Hull University. He was one of the earliest members of the East Yorkshire Local History Society and was also a fellow of the Royal Historical Society and fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.

He published a number of articles on local personalities and topics and produced an edition of the Beverley Corporation Minute Books 1707-1835 for the Yorkshire Archaeological Society Record Series cxxii (1958). He worked on a biographical study of James Acland and published 'James Acland and the Humber Ferries monopolies' in Transport History (1969), but was unable to complete the full study.

He produced a number of small histories of Beverley and the History of Hull he worked on was brought together after his death by Edward Gillett as A history of Hull (1980). He died in 1972.

The preface for the book published in 1980 by Oxford University Press records the fact that work was started by Kenneth MacMahon and that Edward Gillett was asked to complete the book upon MacMahon's death in 1972. The chapter names and titles, as outlined in these papers, were modified ahead of the book's publication.

The book was reprinted in paperback by Hull University Press in 1985.
