Scope and Content

This collection comprises four registers of cases attended by B. I. Clay during her time practicing as a midwife in Kimberley, Nottinghamshire (2 March 1948-9 July 1958), including the name, address and age of each patient, as well as the number of previous labours and miscarriages, the date and hour of her arrival, the presentation of the infant on birth, the date and hour of the birth, the sex of the child and whether the child was born living or dead, whether the child was premature, the name of the doctor if called, if there were any complications during or after labour, the date of her last visit, the condition of the mother and child on her last visit and then any further remarks, together with an ms nurse's time and visit analysis book (1 March 1954-31 March 1958), listing the number of visits she made to patients in their homes or at clinics each day, also detailing the nature of these visits and the total number of hours per week that she spent on duty.
