This collection comprises letters, copies of speeches, essays, research notes and honorary membership certificates of Joan Goodman, together with printed event programmes and invitations, articles, newspaper cuttings and photographs, relating to her experiences as a midwife and her time as President of the Royal College of Midwives between 1947 and 1991, with references to perceptions of midwives and their expanding responsibilities, rates of maternal and perinatal mortality, the definition of maternity care and the work of the International Congress of Midwives.

Administrative / Biographical History
Joan Goodman (fl. 1930-2000) was a midwife who completed her training in 1937. She became the chairman of the Council of the Royal College of Midwives in 1965 and was elected as President from 1966 to 1970. Before this appointment she had been a non-medical Supervisor of Midwives for the London County Council, and then later Borough Nursing Officer for midwifes and district nurses in Lewisham.
