Scope and Content

First proof, 1951, of Augustus John's autobiography Chiaroscuro: Fragments of Autobiography (London: Jonathan Cape, 1952) with emendations and corrections, in ink and pencil, by the author. The book's printed title, 'Many-Coloured Life', has been deleted by John on the front cover, title page and elsewhere (pp. 1-3, 9) and replaced with a new title 'Painter's Pastime'.
There are occasional proof readers' corrections and queries in a cerise ink. Also included are a Director's Memorandum concerning the book's title, 8 June 1961 (f. i), and additional typescript chapters on 'George Bernard Shaw' (ff. 289-293), [Boston] (ff. 294-295) and 'Monty' (ff. 296-297), to be interpolated on pp. 98, 174 and 275 respectively of the proof. Pages 13-14 were apparently removed (in 1962, see NLW MS 24135iD, f. vii) in order that p. 13 could be photographed for use on the back endpapers of Augustus John, Finishing Touches (London, 1964); pp. 13-14 of the second proof (NLW MS 24134C) are absent for the same reason.
