Scope and Content

A two volume work, containing a rapid sketch of the war, maps illustrating the operations and the movements of the forces, photographs of officers, with memoirs and separate records of the services of every British officer who was employed in the war.
The first volume, 'Historical Division', contains a portrait of General Roberts. The second volume, 'Biographical Division', has portraits and biographical notes of officers who lost their lives and of recipients of the Victoria Cross.
The Woodburytype portraits are oval reproductions approximately 35 x 50 mm and are assembled 7 to a page preceding the biographical notes.
It should be noted that two of the deceased officers, Surgeon A.C. Keith and Lieutenant E. Palmer have no portraits and that two officers whose portraits appear, Captain Hare (53) and Lieutenant Lord Ossulton (82) have no biographical entries, but details have been added from other sources. Of the 16 recipients of the Victoria Cross only 9 are pictured.
