Letters to Professor W.E. Styler

This collection contains four letters written to Professor W.E. Styler. Three of the letters concern the Adult Education department at the University of Hull, with two containing comment on W.E. Styler's work 'Tutors for a University'. The fourth letter is from Samuel Beckett concerning his inability to accept an offer to lecture at the University.

Arthur Eustace Morgan was officially appointed as the first Principal of the University on 18 June 1926 and would continue as the Principal until 1935 when he was succeeded by John H. Nicholson. Hector Hetherington, then Professor of Moral Philosophy at Glasgow University and former Principal of University College, Exeter recommended Morgan for the post of Principal. Morgan had been Hetherington's deputy at Exeter from 1920 to 1923 and had taken part in the process by which Exeter was elevated to University College status. Morgan had also been Publicity Secretary to the Committee for the Furtherance of University Education in the South West for several years and had been a Professor at Sheffield University.

Adult Education had been planned as part of the College at Hull since the beginning. Adult Education was intended, in particular, to serve the local community and was the first department to be established at the College with the first Professor of Adult Education, T.H. Searls, beginning on 1 January 1928.

The 'Tutors for a University' pamphlet written by W.E. Styler concerns the provision and quality of teaching for adult education using the details of teaching and classes at the University of Hull as the basis of his assessment. Styler also provides a brief background history of the Department of Adult Education at the University of Hull within the Introduction.
