William Edward Tate was born in 1902. He left school at 15 and attended teacher training college in 1920, gaining his certificate in 1922. He was appointed headmaster of a village school, possibly Sneyd School, Burslem, Stoke on Trent, in 1926. He produced a number of periodical articles and books including The Parish Chest.
