Papers of Harry Samuels OBE (1893-1976), industrial lawyer

Records concerning Samuels' work for the Industrial Welfare Society and other aspects of his legal and political career.

Samuels was born in Liverpool and called to the Bar in 1923. From 1924 he reviewed industrial law cases in the 'Journal of Industrial Welfare' and from 1930 he gave lecture courses on industrial law to members and non-members of the Industrial Welfare Society (IWS). He wrote the original editions of a number of IWS publications and also wrote and lectured on local government law and related matters. He was standing counsel (legal adviser) to the IWS (the Industrial Society from 1965) until 1970. He chaired the Islington and East London Rent Tribunal for twenty-five years and built a reputation as a champion of tenants' rights. He was also a member of the following Jewish organisations: the B'nai B'rith, the Board of Deputies (from 1928) and the Anglo-Jewish Association. He received an OBE for his legal work in 1958.
