Hoyle was the son of John Hoyle. He graduated from the University of Manchester in 1925, and took the MD in 1929. Most of his professional career was spent in London at the Brompton Hospital and King's College Hospital. He was also a physician at the King Edward VII Sanatorium, Midhurst. At King's he took the leading role in setting up the medical unit and was its part-time director.
