Johnson gained his medical education at Durham University, qualifying in 1965, and gaining an MS in 1973. He was senior registrar in Newcastle and assistant professor in the University of California before coming to Manchester in 1974 as senior lecturer in surgery to the University and honorary consultant surgeon at MRI. In 1983, Johnson was appointed reader in surgery. He was also honorary consultant to Manchester Children's Hospital. Johnson was a specialist in transplant surgery, and was a member of council of the British Transplant Society, and sat on a number of panels and committees. He was Hunterian Professor of the RCS in 1981.
