Howarth studied medicine at the University of Manchester (MB ChB 1945, DPM 1947, MD 1949). He held various house appointments in Manchester. From 1950-1962 he lectured in pharmacology at the University of Cambridge. In 1963 he became dean and professor of pharmacology at the Institute of Medical Sciences, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he helped establish the first programme of medical education in that country. From 1972-77 he was professor of pharmacology and director of basic medical science at the University of Jordan. He also held similar appointments in Nigeria and Yemen.
