Harris graduated in economics from the University of Manchester in 1928; he then went on to take a medical degree in 1934. He worked as a psychiatrist for London County Council, and was in the RAF Medical Service during the War. He was later a physician at the Bethlem Royal Hospital and the Maudsley hospital, London. He published papers on schizophrenia.
