Lee qualified in medicine from Leeds University in 1927 and held junior appointments in Leeds. He held tuberculosis appointments in West Riding Yorkshire for a number of years before coming to Manchester in 1932 as assistant chest physician and clinical instructor in chest diseases to the City of Manchester. He held this appointment until 1952, when he was appointed consultant chest physician to Salford and West Manchester Hospitals and medical superintendent to Ladywell Hospital Salford. He retired in 1972. Lee's son, Michael David Lee, was also a medical practitioner.
