Hare graduated in medicine at Edinburgh in 1882. He also studied at universities in Austria and Germany, studying bacteriology at Berlin University. After working at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and the University, he was appointed to the chair in surgery at Owens College. He was also a surgeon at Ancoats Hospital. He was forced to relinquish the chair due to ill-health in 1893. He later practised at Newquay in Cornwall and was school medical inspector in Gateshead at the time of his death.
