Nathan was head of a Manchester shipping merchants. He was actively involved with local medical charities, serving on the board of management of the Christie Hospital and a member of the executive committee of the Holt Radium Institute until its merger with the Christie in 1932. He made major contributions to the building fund of the new Christie Hospital. He was also a donor to the Manchester Radium Fund, launched in 1914 to purchase radium. Nathan was also involved in the British Empire Cancer Campaign and was a member of the Manchester centre of the National Radium Commission. Nathan was active in the Children's Aid Society and the Invalid Society.
