Morley graduated in medicine from the University of Manchester in 1908. In 1912 he was elected honorary surgeon at Ancoats Hospital Manchester and served with the RAMC during the First World War. In 1923 he was appointed surgeon at MRI, where he developed a national reputation for his work on gastric surgery; he also did important work on surgery of the thyroid. From 1936-47 he was professor of surgery at the University of Manchester. He was twice president of the MMS, in 1947 and 1953.
