Needham was born at Salford in 1877 and studied medicine at Owens College, graduating in 1899. He was a house physician at MRI before joining the Indian Medical Service in 1903. He rose to become deputy director-general of the Service, and was knighted in 1932. In retirement he was visited many foreign medical colleges on behalf of the GMC.
