Deeds and licences relating to property in Over Worton.
Around 1501, on the death of John Dynham [Dinham], the Manor of Over Worton was divided between four of his heirs, Elizabeth Sapcotes, Joan, wife of John, Lord Zouche, Edmund Carew and John Arundell. The deeds in this collection primarily deal with the acquisition of these various property holdings by local copyholders including John Meese and his son Robert. The separate parts of the manor were acquired piecemeal by the Meese's from the 1570s to c.1640, by which point Robert Meese held the manor as a whole. The manor was sold to John Cartwright in 1649.
The deeds have been maintained as a single chronological series as the consistuent sections of the manor are difficult to definitely discern. The earliest deeds (E50/D/1-2) deal with the Arundell share. The Carew share likely passed to Henry, Lord Compton - deeds relating to Lord Compton's property include E50/D/4-12 and 17. The Sapcotes share passed to Jasper Dormer - deeds relating to this property include E50/D/3, 13-16, 18-19 and 22-25.
Deposited as accession 387 in 1960.
