Scope and Content

This collection contains records relating to the Dumbarton Steamboat Co. Including minute books (1815-1852); Report of the committees regarding arrangements for adjustment of harbour dues (Transcription included), and memorial to Town Council from Steamboat Companies regarding erection of clock on quay(November 1833); 1 file of correspondence with River Clyde Trustees (18 May 1824).

Administrative / Biographical History

The Dumbarton Steamboat Co. was formed in 1815 and in the same year provided a steamboat service between Dumbarton and Glasgow on the 'Duke of Wellington.' Several other service followed but by the 1860s the new railway had caused a sharp decline in travelers on the steamboats and the last steamboat service sailed in 1869.
