Administrative / Biographical History

David Davies and Company started the sinking of the Garw Ocean pit in 1883 and the colliery was in full operation by 1886. David Davies formed The Blaengarw Ocean Coal Company as a subsiduary of the Ocean Coal Company Limited in 1887 to control his mining interests.

After Nationalisation in 1947 Garw Ocean Colliery was placed in the National Coal Board's South Western Divisions No. 2 Area, Afan Group.

In 1975 the colliery was merged with Ffaldau Colliery.

The Garw/Ffaldau Colliery was closed in December 1985 after the 1984-1985 Miners' Strike.
