Administrative / Biographical History
Rosamund Margaret Porter was born in 1915 and never married. Her father, Walter Reginald Porter (1883-1968), was a bank clerk in Hull. Her mother, Margaret Calladine Ferris (1887-1974), is described by Rosamund Porter as a younger daughter whose 'role was to help at home'. They had one son who died soon after birth in 1913 and only one other child, Rosamund. Rosamund Porter spent her life as an art student for a while, as a member of the women's timber corps during the second world war and as a draughtswoman 1946-1967 before devoting herself to looking after her elderly mother. She took up gardening and genealogy as a hobby tracing her family to a junior branch of the Gale family.
Rosamund Porter traced her family back to James Gale who lived near Scruton, Northallerton, in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century. His grandson, James Gale (b.circa 1490), was a merchant in York and this eldest branch of the family moved from there to Winestead in the East Riding. James Gale's brother, George Gale (1490?-1556), was a goldsmith, treasurer of the king's mint, an alderman and sheriff in York and finally Lord Mayor in 1534 and again in 1549. Many of his descendants lived at Acomb Grange and some moved to Rufforth in the seventeenth century. However, most of the junior branches of the family stayed in the East Riding, in Hull and on the coast in Whitby and Bridlington.
