Scope and Content

New Passage Turnpike Trust records, 1789-1892.

Administrative / Biographical History

Private Acts of Parliament created Turnpike Trusts which comprised a group of trustees, usually members of the local gentry, administering funds provided by subscribers or tally holders to improve and maintain roads and collect tolls for their use. In 1836, a Government inquiry recommended that Turnpike Trusts be wound up, but those still in debt to their subscribers remained in existence into the 1880s, handing their responsibilities to Highways Boards funded by the rates.
