Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
W & J Raeburn brewed at the Merchant Street Brewery in Edinburgh, Scotland, from at least 1863 until about 1897 when the brewery was bought by the trustees of the nearby Heriot College for the purpose of the extension of their college. W & R Raeburn then built a new brewery at Craigmillar, Edinburgh. The Craigmillar New Brewery of W & R Raeburn was established in 1901. In 1913 the brewery was acquired by Edinburgh brewers Robert Younger Ltd. Brewing ceased at Raeburn's former brewery in 1931 as an inter-war economy measure, but never resumed. However, the maltings were still in operation and were leased from 1939 until 1960 to William McEwan & Co Ltd, brewers of Edinburgh, and following the take-over of Robert Younger Ltd by Scottish Brewers Ltd in 1960, were used by the latter firm until 1975. The brewery building had been sold in 1951 to the Brewers Food Supply Co Ltd, Edinburgh, for processing draff. Scottish & Newcastle plc briefly revived the brand name in the mid–1990s, but this was only short–lived.
