Administrative / Biographical History

Sir Cornelius Vermuyden (1595-?1683) a Dutch drainage engineer extensively employed in England, drained Hatfield Chase in the isle of Axholme (70,000 acres) between 1626 and 1631. He is improbably said to have noticed the possibility of reclaiming Hatfield Chase about 1614. This work was vigorously opposed by local people, who destroyed the dykes and killed some of the Dutch and Flemish workmen. Vermuyden was knighted by Charles I in 1629.
