Campbell qualified in 1957 and began his career in anaesthetics at York County and Tadcaster Hospitals as a SHO. After passing his DA in 1959 he joined the RAMC on a short service commission. He held anaesthetics appointments in Manchester hospitals before being appointed consultant anaesthetist to Oldham Health Authority in 1969. In this post he established a pain relief clinic in Oldham and anaesthetised for the world's first test tube baby in 1977. In his onw words "he retired in 1994 to concentrate on making a nuisance of himself at home".
