Gamble was not a medical practitioner. He was a businessman, working in Manchester for a Sheffield steel firm. In 1916 he endowed the Sam Gamble medical scholarships for women medical students at the University of Manchester. He was also treasurer of the Lancashire and Cheshire Society for the Permanent Care of the Feeble-Minded. He was the father of Mercier Gamble.
