Cave took his degree of doctor of medicine at Leyden University in 1779. He then became a physician in the army in Lisbon. In June 1797 he was appointed honorary physician to MRI, but he resigned this position in December of the same year. This resignation occurred after he requested that proper labels were put on medicines dispensed by the hospital. In 1798 he was elected physician to Sheffield General Infirmary resigning eighteen months later. He later may have become an army physician. Cave died circa 1818.
