Blain qualified in medicine at the University of Manchester in 1921. He also qualified in dentistry and studied orthopaedics at Vienna. In 1924, he was appointed resident medical and surgical officer at Manchester Victoria Memorial Jewish Hospital, where he was to spend the rest of his career.Blain played a significant role in building up the reputation of the hospital. His interests included trauma surgery and orthopaedics.
