Davies was the son of Edward Charles Davies, a medical practitioner in Swansea. Davies gained his medical qualification in London, where he held various hospital appointments. He came to Manchester in 1967 as senior medical registrar to MRI, and from 1971 was lecturer in cardiology at the University. In 1974 Davies was appointed consultant physician to Macclesfield Health District.
