Hill Griffith was born in Aberdeen on 29 December 1858 and was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and the University of Aberdeen. After qualifying, he came straight to Manchester as house surgeon to the Royal Eye Hospital, a post he held for nearly seven years. Hill Griffith pioneered the use of cylindrical lenses for the correction of astigmatism. In 1886 he was elected to the honorary surgical staff, where he perfected his technique. Hill Griffith was also a keen microscopist and was awarded the Middlemore Prize of the BMA in 1897. In 1899 Hill Griffith was elected honorary ophthalmologist at MRI, a position he held until 1918. He was also soon after lecturer in ophthalmology at the University of Manchester. In 1918 Hill Griffith retired to Woking. He died on 25 November 1937.
