Administrative / Biographical History

Foundation

This joint-stock bank was formed in 1840 in Worcester where banking was dominated by strong private banks.

Expansion

It expanded cautiously and by 1857 had only one branch. Limited liability was acquired in 1865. Rapid expansion then followed and, by 1889, 24 branches had opened, all within a 30 mile radius of Worcester. Customers were involved predominantly in agriculture and minor local industries. Ludlow & Tenbury Banking Co. (est. 1840) was absorbed in 1864, followed in 1876 by Parsons & Co. (est. 1837) of Presteigne.

Takeover

In 1889, the bank merged with Lloyds.
