Scope and Content

All of Lomas' manuscripts appear to originate from his time as a student in Manchester in the early 1830s when he attended the Pine Street Medical School. The only named lecturer is Samuel Argent Bardsley but it may be possible to infer the source of the other notes based on a knowledge of the staff teaching at the school during this period.

Administrative / Biographical History

John Lomas trained at the Manchester Royal Infirmary and is known to have attended lectures at the Pine Street Medical School, Manchester in the early 1830s where he received the Bardsley Medal. He qualified LSA in 1836, became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1837, and later went on to gain his MD in Berlin in 1839. When he first qualified he was appointed as House Surgeon to the MRI but resigned in 1838 owing to charges of misconduct. He ran a private practice from 10 Chatham Street, Piccadilly in addition to a practice at Wilton Polygon, Cheetham Hill.

Lomas had been elected a member of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society on 21 January 1840. When the Chatham Street Medical School opened in 1850 he joined the teaching staff as a Lecturer in General Anatomy and Physiology alongside John Stuart Wilkinson (d.1852).
