Scope and Content

An album containing prints of various sizes. The album consists of two separate volumes which have been bound together. The two original volumes break down geographically thus:
Volume 1: 1-12 Madeira; 13-23 Lisbon; 24-69 South Africa.
Volume 2: 70-76 South Africa; 77-103 German East Africa (now Tanzania) and Zanzibar.
The prints in volume 1 have typewritten captions pasted below the photographs; captions for volume 2 are either those appearing on the print itself or have been composed for this catalogue (the latter are enclosed in square brackets).
The photographers are largely unknown. Prints 13, 15-18 and 21-22 were taken by L.L. (full name unknown). L.L. was presumably a photographer of French origins working in Lisbon, since many of the captions are in that language. Prints 30, 31, ?32 and 33 were taken by William Roe. Prints 43, 44, ?45-47, 48 and ?49-50 were taken by B.W. Caney. Prints 61, ?68 and 69 were taken by E. Caney. Print 79 was taken by Norton Bros (British Guiana).
