Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Community and Youth Service Association (CYSA) was formed in April 1971 by the amalgamation of the Community Service Association and the Youth Service Association. It was renamed the Community and Youth Workers' Union (CYWU) in 1983. Until 1988 it was a Central Association of the National Union of Teachers (NUT). In that year it considered merging with the NUT, the National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education (NATFHE) or the National and Local Government Officers' Association (NALGO), but decided against and instead signed a partnership agreement with the NUT and applied for affiliation to the TUC in its own right. This, however, was blocked by NALGO, probably influenced by dissident former CYWU members who had defected to the larger union.
On 8 January 2007 it merged with the Transport and General Workers' Union, although retaining its own identity (as CYWU/T&G), and since 1 May 2007 it has been a section of Unite. It retains the abbreviation CYWU, now standing for Community and Youth Workers in Unite.
